Ubi-Fail

Today’s been a bit of a boring day, all things considered. I put Windows 7 on my main desktop, which was a lot easier to get up and running than I remember XP/Vista being. Nothing too flashy until I sign in for the first time, then it finds drivers for all but one of my devices, the exception being my tablet. They still haven’t fixed the Windows Journal problem with two monitors, but oh well. Right now I’m just downloading Steam Games. Oh, and Dawn of War II has just finished loading.

Keeping on gaming, I had to laugh a little inside; today is the second day in a row that people have been having issues with Ubisoft’s new Always-Connected DRM. As much as I don’t like the fact that a skilled few are denying a lot more the right to enjoy the product that they have purchased, I appreciate what said skilled few are doing more. They (in my opinion at least) are speaking up for those that want to say something but don’t have the methods to do so. I hope Ubisoft take note of how passionately people feel about this. This is the downside of license-oriented sales. Unless it’s Digital Distribution, I will always believe that I pay for a physical disc, and unlimited legal usage rights, sans-copying.

[For reference, I would've put a witty mid-jump image of Ezio during the DRM failure. But I haven't got Photoshop working on my desktop yet. I will add it later.]

The only thing of any general note was the Oscars happening last night. And when I say happening, I mean ‘Why on earth is this taking up airtime on every goddamn channel that broadcasts anything resembling news?’. A passing bulletin on BBC News24; I get that. I don’t mind that, but not every hour, especially when E:24 will cover it in more detail. A section on Five News; I can deal with that too. Five News is news for the stupid, so the Oscars would be high-brow stuff for people who watch that. But come on! Do I really need to be told on every channel that ‘OMG THE OSCARS HAPPENED!’? No, not really. Never going to affect me.

Tomorrow is all housework, and perhaps laying the groundwork for Tracks. Ruby on Rails, installing the correct gems, that sort of thing. And probably more Mass effect 2. I’ve seen myself die seven times now; still not tired of the game.
